Birds Flying High After Pirates Win 05/02/2003
Premier Soccer League log leaders Orlando Pirates lost their second game in the space of a week after going down 2-1 to Moroka Swallows at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday night....

Missed chances galore denied the Buccaneers the chance to go five points clear at the top, instead allowing Gavin Hunts Beautiful Birds the opportunity to close to within two.

Swallows are now unbeaten in six games, with the last defeat coming against the same opposition back in mid-December.

However, it could well have been a repeat of that result had the home side taken some of the chances that came their way.

Benedict Vilakazi and the leagues leading goalscorer, Lesley Manyathela, could have easily secured the three points if they were on song.

As it was, Manyathela did increase his goal tally to 12 when he slotted the ball home in the 39th minute after his strike-partners shot came back off the crossbar.

But the Birds hit back with a wonder strike from midfielder Jabulani Mendu, who beat Michel Babale in the Pirates goal from well outside the box.

The home side then missed a penalty in the second half, before Bafana Bafana winger Japhet Zwane converted a corner to clinch the win.
