Orlando Pirates continued their charge towards the Premier Soccer League title with a tough 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at the Rand Stadium on Wednesday.
A late Lesley Manyathela goal was all the Buccaneers needed to win the Soweto derby and move up to second on the log, a point behind leaders SuperSport United with two games in hand.
Swallows remain down in seventh position, a full eight points behind the leaders after losing the fourth game of the campaign.
Pirates had the better of the early exchanges and in fairness should have had the game wrapped up by the break.
Manyathela squandered a number of chances, although he was unlucky to have a goal disallowed in the 29th minute when referee Sipho Masondo ruled interference on Birds keeper Brendan Wardle after the ball was in the back of the net.
The home side looked better after the break and could have levelled the scores but for Abednego Netshiozwis goalline clearance from Lucas Sebona shot.
However, Pirates hit back and the pressure eventually paid off when Manyathela hit the winner in the 78th minute.
And they could have wrapped it up in style five minutes from time, but midfielder Sibusiso Mazibuko shot straight at Wardle in a one-on-one situation.
