A substitution gamble gone wrong from Ajax Cape Town coach Gordon Igesund helped Moroka Swallows to a 1-0 win at the Rand Stadium on Sunday.
The former Manning Rangers, Orlando Pirates and Santos coach put all his eggs in one basket when he completed his substitutions at halftime.
But when Nathan Carelse was injured in the 59th minute, it left the Urban Warriors with an uphill struggle, especially after going a goal down after only 20 minutes.
"We gave away a silly goal and then I gambled by using all my substitutes at halftime, Igesund said.
"When Carelse left the field we couldn't bring on anybody else and we were in trouble."
Ajax keeper Moeneeb Joseph let in the soft goal when he failed to hold on to a tame drive by Lucas Sebone. Samuel Ngobeni was on hand for the easy tap-in, giving the Birds three points to move them up to seventh on the table.
The result was another cruel blow for Igesunds team theyre now firmly entrenched in the relegation zone, having won only three of their 11 games to date.
