Swallows Stunned By Wits Fight-Back 24/11/2002
Wits University came back from a goal behind to beat Moroka Swallows 3-1 in 90 minutes of enthralling Castle Premiership League football at the Rand Stadium on Sunday.

Wits University came back from a goal behind to beat Moroka Swallows 3-1 in 90 minutes of enthralling Castle Premiership League football at the Rand Stadium on Sunday.

Bafana Bafana international Japhet Zwane had given Gavin Hunts side the lead midway through the first half. The Birds held on to their advantage until the break, but there is no way they could have anticipated the kind of second half riposte by the Students.

Manqoba Ngwenya led the fight-back with a goal either side of Leonard Carsners striker as Wits produced a powerful display of attacking football.

After the Swallows goal, the pendulum started swinging in Roger De Sas sides favour as they started playing purposefully in search of the equalizer. But for all their determination and for all the chances they conjured owing to their admirable work ethic, Swallows could not find the net, with their strikers turning turns to spurn decent opportunities, Gareth Devine being the main culprit.

The match was as open as any, with both sides creating opportunities but failing to capitalize. A little more discipline in front of goal and the fans would have been treated to more goals, not that they will be complaining after the four they witnessed.

As the match reached the half-hour mark, Swallows drew first blood when Zwane scored a predatory goal.

Wits goalkeeper Wayne Roberts could only block Gavin Samuels strike straight at Zwane, who accepted the invitation with relish to give Swallows the lead.

Sloppiness started to creep into Swallowss game and their overall play lacked cutting edge and passion allowing Wits to wrestle away the initiative.

After having seen a numerous chances go begging in the first half, Wits started the second in determined mood.

The danger signs for Swallows were there as early as the first minute of the second half when two-goal hero Ngwenya saw his effort cannon off the crossbar.

Then the cat was thrown among the pigeons when Zimbabwean international Charles Yohane sent in an inviting cross for Ngwenya to score the leveler and the first of his brace.

Wits then seized the initiative with gusto and never quite relinquished their stranglehold on the match.

Carsner then gave the Clever Boys the lead for the first time after the three quarter mark before Ngwenya completed a stunning fight-back with his second and the teams third goal of the match.
