Etafia Gets National Call-Up
Swallows goalkeeper Greg Etafia has received a call-up to the Nigerian national squad to play in a friendly against Japan in Tokyo on August 20.

This match takes place only two days before Swallows kick-off their league campaign against Wits University, and so it is doubtful if Etafia will be available for that game due to the long flight involved.

The purpose of the friendly is to prepare the Nigerian players for the African Nations Cup finals in Tunisia, which kicks off on January 24 next year.

The Birds number one recently made his debut for the Super Eagles in a four-nation tournament in Abuja. He is part of an 18 man squad which includes Tunisian-based goalkeeper Austin Ejide.

Arsenal striker Nwankwo Kanu was a surprising omission from the squad, whose last match was a 1-0 win over Venezuela in a friendly played in Watford.

Etafia had previously represented his country at under-23 level in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

The Nigerian has gone from strength to strength since joining the Birds last season, becoming the Swallows number one goalkeeper choice after ousting the likes of Arthur Baartman and Brendon Wardle.

His reputation has grown to the point where he is now considered to be one of the top keepers in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), and has now been duly rewarded for his fine form by receiving recognition from his country's selectors.
