Mhlongo Named As Bafana Captain 19/07/03
Temporary Bafana Bafana coach Kenneth "Conti" Kubheka has handed the captain's armband to Wits University midfielder Benson Mhlongo for South Africas Cosafa Castle Cup game against Zimbabwe in East London today.

The choice come as as somewhat as a surprise as Mhlongo has only Bafana cap to his name and only made his debut in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) last season.

The 22-year-old had previously been at Supersport United, where he was part of the youth development scheme.

The tall defensive midfielder did however have a highly impressive season for the Students, who were one of the surprise packages in the league.

He now has a chance to stake his claim in the centre midfielder holding role. This role is currently up for grabs as players such as Teboho Moekena and MacBeth Sibaya have not really done enough to make that position their own.
