Pirates Crash Out Of Supa 8 09/08/03
Orlando Pirates were dumped out of the SAA Supa 8 competition in the first round after going down 2-1 to Jomo Cosmos.

Pirates got off to the worst possible start when they conceded a goal in the 10th minute after some poor defending from a Cosmos corner.

Malawian striker Russell Mwafulirwa was left unattended in the box and rose high above the Pirates defence to score with a powerful header.

The remainder of the first half was a fairly even affair, with the Buccaneers enjoying a slight possession advantage.

But it was Cosmos who managed to increase their lead in the 30th minute when a flowing move down the left flank lead to man-of-the-match Lucky Mhlathi cooly slotting the ball beyond the oncoming John Tlale.

The Buccaneers looked a different team in the second half as they really took the game to their opponents.

New signing Patrick Thwala looked particularly impressive down the left flank as he caused Cosmos endless problems with his pace and mazy runs.

It was indeed Thwala's speed which caused Teboho Moekena to mistime his challenge on the Pirates winger, resulting in the Bafana Bafana midfielder being sent off for a second bookable offence in the 55th minute.

From then on it was all Pirates as they continued to pepper Cosmos goalkeeper Avril Phali with long range shots, with Joseph Makhanya and Steve Lekoelea being particularly guilty of not finding the target.

Bucs' persistence finally paid off in injury time when they earned a somewhat dubious penalty kick after Lesley Manyathela seemed to be pulled down in the box.

"Slow Poison" picked himself up to put the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was too late for Pirates as the full-time whistle was blown barely a minute later.
