Amakhosi Go Top

21/09/03
Kaizer Chiefs have lived up to their early season billing as title favourites when they beat Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at Ellis Park on Sunday afternoon to go top of the Castle Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs moved to the top of the Castle Premiership toady with a 1-0 victory against previous log-leaders Ajax Cape Town.

Amakhosi were made to work hard for the home victory in a tough match which lived up to its top-of-the-table expectations.

Chiefs went into the lead after Sibusiso Dlamini put the ball past Ajax keeper Moeneeb Josephs in the 29th minute.

The star of the day was undoubtedly Chiefs keeper Rowen Fernandez, who enthralled the 30 000-strong crowd with some excellent saves.

Fernandez denied Ajax striker Wilfred Mugeyi in the seventh and 18th minute, and pulled off a brilliant stop from Mulekelayi Kanku in the 39th minute.

However, had it not been for Joseph's at the other end the result could easily have been far more in Chiefs' favour. Josephs produced the save of the match in the 57th minute by palming Dlamini's attempt over the crossbar.

Ajax striker Josep Ngake had a golden opportunity to level the scores in the 77th minute but somehow managed to blast the ball over the crossbar from close range.

The visitors showed promise of equalising again with only two minutes left on the clock, but Fernandez managed to save a close-range shot from Alfred Phiri. The win for Amakhosi placed them above Ajax in what promises to be a heated title race.
