The People's team team finally ended Wits University's run of 12 games without defeat when they scored a 1-0 victory over the Students at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday night.
Santos only needed one goal to stop Wits who had been unstoppable in the premier league. The goal can through a penalty after Neil Winstanley had handled the ball in the penalty area.
Referee Ronney Marhule showed Charles Yohane, the Clever boys' captain, a yellow card for protesting the penalty. Musa Ongao was given the honour of taking the spot kick and sent Wits keeper Wayne Roberts the wrong way.
The Students had the better of their hosts but luck was not on their side. Their 13th league game was indeed a an unlucky 13 for the Clever Boys who had not lost in their last 12 league games.
In the second half Yohane thought that he had scored equalizer but his header went just wide of the upright.
With Wits putting applying more pressure, Santos were lucky when goalkeeper Brenden Wardle came off his line and missed the ball, but managed to recover before the Wits players had a chance to score into the empty net.
In the 83th minute Yohane again missed with a header and Santos managed to hang on for their lead, shooting them up to second place on the Castle Premiership log in the process.
The Students are now in fifth place, five points adrift of log leaders, Kaizer Chiefs.
