Sundowns blew their chance to get 2004 off to a flyer when they surrendered a two goal advantage to Manning Rangers in a Castle Premiership game played at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.
The goals for the Brazilians came in a three minute spell just after the hour mark - first Thumelo Mofokeng grabbed the opener in the 61st minute and then Zambian defender Sashi Chalwe doubled the lead in the 63rd minute.
Coach Khabo Zondo must have thought his team were heading to their third win of the season, only to see a 10-man Mighty Maulers team fight back - first through a penalty by former Cosmos striker Lebohang Kukame in the 76st minute and then defender Paul O'Neil grabbed the equaliser seven minutes later.
The result sees Downs move up one place into tenth position, and so at least now a top eight finish is well within site for the Brazilians.
Rangers, meanwhile, remain languishing in 12th position, only three points above the relegation zone.
