With eleven matches to go until the end of the season Ajax Cape Town captain Alfred Phiri believes the Urban Warriors are still very much in the race for the league championship despite the recent setback against Dynamos.
The former Bafana Bafana international spoke to www.ajaxct.com on Friday&
Question: Alfred, what went wrong when Ajax drew with Dynamos?
Alfred Phiri: Man, we went into the half time break leading and when we came back we wanted to score a second goal. We pushed all our players forward and that led to us being exposed at the back and Dynamos equalised.
Q: Now you are third on the log and Kaizer Chiefs are second, Do you think that you will be able to make up the lost ground?
AP: Santos have seven games left and Chiefs have 13 matches before they finish their league games. In all those games, none of those teams will win all their matches. Same as us but we will try not to lose points like what we did against Dynamos.
If one looks at Chiefs, they still have Orlando Pirates and Supersport to play against. Don't forget that they are not going to leave Newlands with any points on Wednesday night when we play them.
Q: What did the coach Gordon Igesund say after the Dynamos game?
AP: He did not say much because like the players, he was disappointed. Those two points we lost in that match would have taken us to two points clear of Chiefs.
Mind you Chiefs have a two-match advantage over us, that's why I am talking much about them rather than Santos who have played four games more than us. We are in the home run now and you don't want your opponents to think that they have an advantage over you.
Q: You have been losing points to teams that are not in the title race any more. How are you going to prevent that happening again if you are going to win the league.
AP: People have asked me that before, we have one of the best coaches who is able to regroup the team after a defeat and I think mentally Gordon has made players believe in their ability, that they can do it and they are going to do it. Right now we have already worked on our mistakes against Dynamos.
All the players are just waiting for Chiefs on Wednesday. We know what we want and we are going to get it.
The pressure is not on us so much but on Chiefs because they do not know how it feels to be the champions and they think that they will win the league. That is going to destroy them.
Ajax don't forget that they have a coach who knows what it takes to be the champions and no one will dispute that.
