Orlando Pirates kicked their 2004/05 campaign off in fine style when they beat Jomo Cosmos 1-0 in an entertaining PSL game played at the Johannesburg Stadium on Friday night.
The home team enjoyed a good opening 15 minutes, but were not able to turn their superiority into goals.
Pirates were reduced to 10 men when James Mothibi was giving his marching orders in the 37th minute.
However, this set back did not affect Bucs too much as Cosmos did not make use of their one man advantage.
The Buccaneers took the lead when Gift Leremi, who was the best player on the park on the night, scored in the 51st minute after receiving a pass from Benedict Vilakazi.
The U-23 international, who spent most of last season warming the bench at Pirates, showed great composure to fend off two defenders before firing in an unstoppable shot.
He came close to scoring a second goal in the 64th minute but his 30m grass-cutter was pushed out for a corner by Avril Phadi.
In the 76th minute Amabhakabhaka keeper Williams Okapara came to the rescue for his team when he pulled of a fine save against Seuntjie Motlhajwa.
Cosmos certainly had their chances and on another night the result might have been different if the Ezenkhosi strikers had been on target.
New coach Kosta Papic will certainly be happy with the three points gained as he looks to prove himself to the demanding Buccaneers faithful.
