Ajax trounce Phunye Sele Sele 27/08/04
Ajax Cape Town returned to winning ways when they trounced newly promoted Bloemfontein Celtic 3-0 in a Castle Premiership game at the Newlands Stadium on Friday night.

Moeneeb Josephs marked his return to the team after a two match suspension with an assured display between the posts, which helped inspire the hosts to a comfortable win.

The Urban Warriors went into the lead in the 23rd minute when Shane Poggenpoel headed in a cross, which was initially saved, however the Ajax midfielder was on hand to put the ball in the net himself.

Debutant Marco Mthembu got his new career with Ajax off to a flyer when he doubled the lead in the 37th minute after he slotted the ball into the net following Joseph Ngake's shot which had rebounded off the post.

Ajax then virtually wrapped matters up in the 39th minute when striker Nathan Paulse scored the Cape side's third goal after having been put into space on the left hand side before showing good composure to finish off the move.

The home team enjoyed virtually all of the play in the first half as the visitors struggled to make any impression.

The only save Ajax keeper Moeneeb Josephs had to make was when he took too long to clear the ball and had to rectify his own mistake.

The visitors' second half performance was an improvement on the first and they managed to keep the scoreline respectable by not allowing Ajax any further goals.

Phunye Sele Sele came close to pulling a goal back in the 53rd minute when Lebagona Mphongoa struck a fierce sot, but Josephs was equal to the task.

The result sees Gordon Igesund's men move off the foot of the table into a much more respectable 7th place, while the Free State team are in 12th position.
