Former Bafana Bafana captain Mbulelo Mabizela made his first start of the season for Tottenham Hotspur in the Carling Cup against Oldham last night.
Spurs won the game by 6 - 0. Mabizela played at the right back position vacated by Stephen Carr who left for Newcastle United.
The right-back position is where Mabizela started his career at Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana. The defender has played in his third position of the year after featuring in the midfield and central defence position for Bafana.
However, the defender will not be making the trip to Uganda next month due to a suspension. Perhaps this is a good omen for Mabizela as it will allow him time to cement his place at Spurs after the arrival of French coach Jacques Santini.
There was a lot of doubt about Mabizela's future at the club after the departure of David Pleat. Perhaps the start against Oldham is the first indication that Santini has faith in the young defender.
