Ajax Cape Town bounced back from their midweek defeat to Orlando Pirates when they beat Silver Stars 1-0 in a Castle Premiership fixture at Newlands Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Midfielder Mulekelayi Kanku scored midway through the second half to secure the three points for the Urban Warriors.
A sudden cloud burst seconds before the kick-off spoiled the promise of good flowing football and with the pitchy all slippery, both sides struggled to find their rhythm.
The home side almost went behind in the 10th minute when Tshinyama Tsholola's stray pass was intercepted by Michael Khaile, but a brilliant sliding tackle inside the area by Bageta spared the defender's blushes.
The visitors received a major setback when striker Victor Dos Santos was harshly red-carded for his tackle on Tsholola.
This allowed Ajax to push forward more and almost went ahead in the 40th minute when Marco Mthembu volleyed from the edge of the area, but the goalkeeper Johannes Diale produced a superb save to deny the winger.
The home missed another chance to break the deadlock when Brent Carelse surged down the left flank before delivering a dangerous low cross into the area, but striker Nathan Paulse just missed the ball.
The second half started with Ajax immediately imposing themselves on their opponents.
The home side camped in the Stars half for long periods and were duly rewarded in the 68th minute when Mulekelayi Kanku capitalised on some poor defending by the visiting defence during a goalmouth scramble, to stroke the ball home.
Despite Ajax maintaining their dominance throughout the match, the Stars players defended brilliantly to deny the home side from extending their lead.
The result ensures Ajax moves up three places to fifth spot in the Castle Premiership, while Silver Stars remain in 10th spot.
The Urban Warriors' next Premiership fixture will be in the local Cape Town derby against Santos at Newlands Stadium.
