Permall reveals new-found confidence 29/09/04
Shaun Permall has endured a tough start to his Moroka Swallows career, but the striker revealed to having a new-found confidence this season and praised coach Gavin Hunt for his new outlook to life.

Signed from Kaizer Chiefs two season ago, the former South Africa under-23 striker was dealt a major blow when he broke his ankle in the first week of his maiden season with the Birds and was sidelined for two months before he started kicking a ball again.

"That was the low point of my football career when I was injured because the previous season when I was still with Chiefs, I did not play very well and I was hoping that I was going to resurrect my career with a new club and then the injury put everything on hold," said Permall.

That injury has been haunting Permall long after his recovered and a small group of Swallows supporters were not happy with him, booing him whenever he takes the field.

However, the lanky striker admitted that his teammates have been great in helping him get through the tough times.

"I have tried to concentrate on my game every time that Gavin Hunt puts me in the team and all my teammates have been encouraging me to forget the rowdy elements in the crowd," said Permall.

The striker confessed that it was Hunt who has helped him regain his confidence.

"The coach has been putting it in my head every time that I must stay focused and I am a good player and that I should just keep on working very hard and I that is what I've been doing

"There is so much depth in the team, which has made training very tough because of the competition for a places. Swallows is doing very well because of it, I think of the competition, like for me as a striker, we have four strikers in the squad and one has to earn his place at training and that means every striker has to be at his best every time."

Permall confessed that since his moved from Ajax Cape Town and joined Kaizer Chiefs, he has not established himself as a feared striker.

"When I moved from Cape Town to Jo'burg, I did not play as well as I had hoped, but Gavin Hunt has been motivating me and that is why I think I have my confidence back now," he said.
