Santos defender Jeremy Jansen received an eight-year jail sentence for abduction, rape and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.
Jansen was sentenced by the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, ending a two-year ordeal for his girlfriend, who told e-tv on Wednesday that the star player took her to a secluded beach two years ago and tried to rape her.
She revealed that she tried to fight back, but Jansen then proceeded to stab her 13 times with a screwdriver and strangled her as well, which caused her to give in to him.
Santos chairman Goolam Allie distanced the club away from the footballer, claiming that Jansen was no longer on the club's books.
Allie says the former Seven Stars and Ajax Cape Town player was a former player of Santos and revealed that Jansen has been playing in the Mvela Golden League with Avendale Athletico.
The People's Team boss insists that his club strongly opposes violence against women and children.
