Birds Held By People's Team 16/02/05
Moroka Swallows were held to a 1 - 1 draw by Santos in front of their home fans at the Rand Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Innocent Chikoya had the first real opportunity to score in the 24th minute when he cut inside the Santos box and fired in a good shot at goal, however his shot bent away from Santos Jason Barnards goal and out for a goalkick.

In the 29 Swallows were awarded a penalty when Byrone Hendricks handled the ball in the area. Midfielder Alfred Phiri took responsibility firing the ball wide of Barnard and into the back of the net.

Santos whipped back at Swallows and almost pulled level in the 31st minute, however, Swallows Conrad Hendricks did well too twice deny Robert Nauseb.

However Santos were soon back in the game, Swallows conceded a corner and Santos striker Carlo Scott fired the ball in. Alfred Phiri who had scored only four minutes earlier saw his attempted clearance end up in the back of his own net.

They continued to apply pressure and were unlucky when captain Musa Otienos header was cleared off the line by the Swallows defence.

The half time saw both teams locked in a gruelling contest fighting for maximum points.

Ten minutes after the restart Dennis Lota saw his shot cleared off the line. Swallows adopted a different approach and tried to attack the heart of Santos defence. they were closed out brilliantly by central defenders, Musa Otieno and Zvenyika Makonese.

Swallows had a late scare when Otieno headed past Hendricks and saw his effort headed clear off the line by Chikoya who saved a certain goal.

Former Supersport United striker Daniel Matsau was introduced in the 69th minute and came on looking to get his name on the score sheet. He had an excellent opportunity when he broke down the left flank and fired his shot in at goal but his effort was high and wide of the target.

Swallows Lota was eager to give Swallows maximum points and was on song with his shots, in the 90th minute he struck a superb shot that ran inches wide of Barnards goal, with the Santos goalminder well beaten.
