The 'Great Soccer Bet' Is Launched 18/04/05
The Premier Soccer League is proud to announce that it has officially entered into a partnership agreement with Phumelela the horseracing and tote betting operator in South Africa, with the launch of the PSL Soccer 6 Bet product.

Phumelela, the JSE-listed horseracing and tote betting operator, launched Soccer 6 in February 2003.

The objectives of the bet were to diversify Phumelelas range of tote bets on horseracing and to simultaneously enhance soccer fans' enjoyment of the game.

"For us, the foray into betting on soccer was a natural extension of our partnership with soccer, which had started a year before when we entered into a three-year sponsorship agreement with PSL team Supersport United," said Phumelela Chief Operating Officer David Attenborough.

"That agreement has since been converted into a sponsorship of the Supersport United Youth Academy and a community youth soccer development project in partnership with Supersport United," he added.

Soccer 6 is offered on both SA and UK soccer. Pools on both bets have soared in size since Soccer 6s introduction and currently total more than R 1,2 million each weekend. The SA Soccer 6 accounts for more that 60% of the overall pool.

Whereas the PSL previously endorsed the bet, they have now become full partners in the SA Soccer 6 with Phumelela, which operates both the SA and UK Soccer 6 in conjunction with Gold Circle. As part of the new agreement, the SA Soccer 6 has been renamed and re-branded as the PSL Soccer 6 with immediate effect.

"Soccer 6 is going from strength to strength. The bet has developed a strong following among soccer fans and many horseracing fans also enjoy playing the bet. With the PSLs full support, the popularity of the bet is set to soar," said Phumelela Chief Operating Officer David Attenborough.

Phumelela operates horseracing and tote betting in seven of South Africas nine provinces, while Gold Circle is the racing and tote operator in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape. The two companies combine all tote bets in South Africa into national pools through Phumelelas sophisticated Amtote betting system.

"Soccer betting, which forms part of the Gateway 2010 Strategic Plan currently being implemented by the PSL, has now become a reality through our partnership with Phumelela and the launch of PSL Soccer 6 Bet.  I am pleased that all our plans in the Gateway 2010 are being achieved on time and believe that the PSL Soccer 6 product will benefit all soccer fans in South Africa and will extend the PSL brand even further into the soccer community and into everyday South African life," said PSL Chief Executive Officer Trevor Phillips

To play PSL Soccer Bet you have to predict the results of six PSL matches. There are three results to choose from per match - a win for Team A, a draw, or a win for Team B.

In each match, one team is designated Team A and the other Team B. The six matches are labelled M1 to M6.

You can play a single entry or multiple entries. With a single entry you select one result for each match and the bet costs only six rand.

You can choose more than one result in one or more matches. Thats a multiple entry; the cost is six rand per combination.

PSL Soccer 6 can be played at over 400 TABs located countrywide or by phoning 0800 11 300 or online through www.soccer6.co.za.  PSL Soccer 6 is not as of yet available at TABs in KwaZulu-Natal, but will be in the near future.
