According to media speculation abroad, Bafana Bafana striker Benni McCarthy may join up with his South African team-mate at Blackburn Rovers, Aaron Mokoena.
Blackburn boss Hughes is said to have put McCarthy on top of his shopping list for the upcoming European summer transfer market.
After having helped Porto to win the Champion's League and the Portuguese league last season, McCarthy has failed to have the same impact this time round as Porto, who lost their coach Jose Mourinho to Chelsea, have struggled both domestically and in Europe.
At current they are fourth in the league standings and to make matters worse for McCarthy, he has just served his third suspension of the season for various forms of ill-discipline.
The Cape Town born striker has made no secret of his ambition to join the English Premiership in the past and has been unsuccessfully linked to the lies of Manchester City, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough.
His Bafana Bafana skipper, 'The Axe' Mokoena, has had an extremely impressive debut season at Rovers and this could encourage Hughes to pursue McCarthy's signature with even more vigour.
Hughes is said to be set on signing a new target man and Benfica striker Tom Sokota is also on his list.
