At the end of 2004, the annual Pick n Pay Vuselela Football Tournament took place at the training grounds of Ajax Cape Town.
The event entailed all Pick n Pay staff & supporters from almost every province in the country gathering at Ikamva in Cape Town to support their relevant provincial football teams. The three day tournament produced many entertaining games of football and some outstanding players.
The pick of the bunch was definitely Mbongiseni Taribo Nxumalo, who duly received the Player of the Tournament award. The 24 year-old who hails from Newcastle in Kwazulu-Natal is a shelf-packer at the local Pick n Pay.
Taribo, as he prefers to be called, plays at right-back and impressed some scouts with his performances at the tournament. By winning the Player of the tournament award, he earned himself a trial with the Ajax first team.
The player recently spent the week training with the Ajax Cape Town first team at Ikamva. He also played a full ninety minutes for the Ajax Cape Town Reserves, in a friendly game against the University of Cape Towns first team. The player delivered another one of his solid performances and assisted Ajax to a 3-2 victory.
Taribo has definitely impressed the Ajax technical staff with his determination and commitment. The club will be monitoring his progress and will keep him in consideration when theres a vacancy at the right-back position in the Ajax defence.
