Injury-plagued Fish hangs up his boots 17/08/05
Former Bafana Bafana favourite Mark Fish has decided to retire from football due to a long-standing knee injury.

Fish was released by English Premiership outfit Charlton Athletic at the end of last season after an injury-ridden campaign.

He recently joined Championship side Ipswich Town on a month's loan but he called it a day after struggling with knee problems in recent years.

"I can no longer play to the high standards I have set myself so I feel it is time to move on," he declared.

The former Pirates star has been one of South Africa's most successful players and has enjoyed spells at  Lazio in Italy as well as Bolton Wanderers and Charlton in England.

Fish made a mammoth 62 appearances for Bafana and played in the 1996 side that won the African Nations Cup and in the historic first appearance at the 1998 World Cup Finals in France.
