Golden Arrows beat Moroka Swallows 2-0 in a Castle PSL encounter at the Rand Stadium on Saturday.
Swallows, aiming to finish the season as runners-up to newly crowned champions Orlando Pirates, began the match strongly, pressurising the Arrows defence from the opening whistle.
However, as the half progressed the visitors played themselves back into the match and took the lead near the end of an evenly-matched first 45 minutes.
Swallows' Japie Motale was adjudged to have fouled Vumile Dladla inside the penalty area in the 39th minute and the referee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Mabhuti Khanyeza calmly stroked the ball past Birds goalkeeper Greg Etafia, who dived the wrong way and Arrows went into the break a goal to the good.
Gavin Hunt's men came out firing at the start of the second half but suffered a fatal setback only five minutes after the restart when Arrows scored the second, and decisive, goal. A long ball out of defence found the blond dreadlocked Khanyeza unmarked with only Etafia to beat and he made no mistake to double the score.
Try as they might Swallows couldn't lift themselves sufficiently to get back into the match and began to run out of ideas and motivation as the match - and their long season - wound down to a close.
Wits, by virtue of their 4-2 win away at Manning Rangers, secured the runners-up squad, while swallows had to be content with finishing third. Arrows ended the season impressively in fifth spot.
