Soweto Derby: Bucs Versus Birds 06/01/04
The title credentials of defending champions Orlando Pirates and Moroka Swallows will be severely tested on Saturday when the two historical Soweto rivals clash at the Johannesburg Stadium in their first games of the new year.

The Birds and Buccaneers trail league leaders Kaizer Chiefs by four and seven points respectively, with both teams determined to retain the momentum that has them flying high in the upper echelons of the title race.

With more or less the same squad as last season, but beefed up by the arrival of players like Lungisani Ndlela, Shaun Permall and Dennis Lota, Gavin Hunt's team is desperate to lay its hands on the championship after coming so close last time out.

The black and white division of Soweto has had much to cheer about since Augusto Palacios took over as care-taker coach of the Sea Robbers, the team thrilling the Ghost playing soccer brimming with passion and flair.

The battle of both sets of wingers should be a spectacle.

The Birds have the pacy Lucas Sebona and Edzai Kasinauyo patrolling the flanks while Pirates have the skilful Joseph Makhanya and the explosive Patrick Twala ready to wreak havoc.

The presence of this foursome should have defenders from both teams expecting a torrid afternoon while the fans are sure to be on the edge of their seats as Sowetos two oldest clubs lock horns.

Probable Team Line-Ups

Pirates: (4-3-2-1) Radebe, Tau, Khomane, Malinga, Netshiozwi, Phakathi, Tshabalala, Leremi, Makhanya, Vilakazi, Kauleza

Swallows: (4-4-1-1) Etafia, Petersen, McNab, Lewis, Christian, Sebona, Rabolele, Mazibuko, Kasinauyo, Lota, Ndlela
