Moroka Swallows new signing Zitha Mofokeng is determined to help the club land the Castle Premiership title this season.
The 22-year-old central defender signed a six-month contract with the Dube Birds last month after spending the last four years with Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam.
My first few weeks with Swallows have been wonderful, said Mofokeng. The team has been very welcoming and I have felt at ease.
The Pretoria-born under-23 international has been struck by the spirit in the Swallows camp; something he believes can lead the club to the championship.
What immediately struck me was the togetherness of the players and their dedication to working hard for each other.
It is a team that wins and not the individual, and I think the coach Gavin Hunt has got the players thinking along these lines.
"With all the players working towards a common goal I think we have a very good chance of winning the league title."
Many people were surprised that Mofokeng chose to return to South Africa after spending so much time in Europe, some suggesting he had been axed by Ajax.
Ninja, as Mofokeng is nicknamed, is quick to put the record straight.
My contract with Ajax only expired in 2006 and I could of remained their until then, he explained.
However, this would not have been in the best interests of my career because I was not featuring in the clubs first team.
This was holding my career back and it especially affected my chances of playing for Bafana Bafana, he added.
So it was for this reason that I asked to be either loaned out or for my contract to be terminated and paid out. The club chose the latter and I became a free agent at the beginning of the year.
Mofokeng is a former Transnet School of Excellence player.
He has also captained the national under-23 team.
