Young Birds set for Metropolitan Cup 07/04/04
The Moroka Swallows U-19 team have left Johannesburg are and are all geared up for the forthcoming Metropolitan Premier Cup held from the 7th April to the 12th April at Erica Park in Belhar, Cape Town.

The Young Birds are set to make their debut in the most prestigious youth football tournament in South Africa. The various professional academies of South Africa, notably Ajax Cape Town, Santos, Feyernoord/Supersport and defending champions Wits University, will display their talent over the Easter weekend.

The Soweto giants are placed in Group F along with Belhar Spurs, Cultural Roots and New Zealand team Fencibles United.

The club has selected a team comprising of 18 players and five technical staff.

Former Swallows legend "Ace" Mnini will assume the role of head coach along with Paul Habib, the director of coaching at Swallows.

Habib commented on the prospects of the fledgling Dube Birds squad.

"This is a young team, we need to crawl before we can walk," he said. "But we are quite positive, we aim to get through the first round, then take it game for game."

The team does, however, posses a trio of players, who have the ability to set the tournament alight with their silky skills.

Lucky Motaung , who made his debut in the Absa Cup for the senior team against Tornado FC on Saturday, will captain the team.

South African schools international Tso Madlala will add creativity behind the strikers where Graig Mulambi will shoot for goal.

For the entire team, the trip in itself will be major experience.

"There are lots of underprivileged kids in this team. None of them have even been to Cape Town," added Habib.

Club sponsors Total and Reebok have combined to kit the team out in official replica outfits to resemble the senior team. Each player will receive a pair of boots, tracksuit and kit.

The players will stay at the Holiday Inn, Woodstock for the duration of the tour.

The full squad is: Mike Michailidis, Kevin Morrall, Thami Legodi, Jabu Radebe, Seun Ngabi, Thabiso Mokoena, Prince Ntsibande, Kabelo Phaladi, Lucky Motaung, Jabulane Ntobela, Vusi Radebe, Tso Madlala, Christopher Mashigo, Freedom Ndlovu, Nqobi Zuma, Graig Mulambi, Sibusiso Ncumalo and Mkhelele Mambaso.
