Lewis looking forward to Africa 15/06/04
Moroka Swallows defender Warren Lewis is confident the Birds will be successful in Africa after qualifying for the CAF Cup by annexing the ABSA Cup on Sunday.

Gavin Hunt's side have been in two Cup finals this season, but lost out to Jomo Cosmos in the Coca Cola Cup.

However, they made up for the disappointing loss by beating Manning Rangers 3-1 in the ABSA Cup final at Vodacom Park on Sunday, to end their 13-year trophy drought.

"They are very few opportunities that players get to play in two Cup final in one season and we took our chances after we failed to win the Coca Cola Cup against Jomo Cosmos and we knew that we had to win the ABSA Cup to show for our hard work," said Warren Lewis.

He also believes the Birds have vastly improved under the astute guidance of coach Gavin Hunt and conceded that the players are looking forward to the African club competition next season.

"We started the season very well and at one point we were leading but we drew about 6 games out of 10 and that affected our chances to challenge for the league championship," said the former Orlando Pirates player.

Lewis says the players felt that lifting the ABSA Cup was their way of thanking Hunt for believing in them when people were saying that the were not good enough to win any trophy.

"Because of playing in the ABSA Cup, we don't have a long off-season but I will use that time to work in the gym because next season we will be playing more games because of playing in Africa.

"I have been there with Pirates and I know that one needs to be fit to stand the competition and I hope that my experience in the continental competition will help Swallows," said Lewis.
