'Swallows Under 13's test their metal' 30/06/04
Mmabatho Tournament - 11 June to 13 June 2004 - The Under-13, Moroka Swallows Youth Development team participated in a Tournament held in Mmabatho.

This team as invited to attend the Knowsley Liverpool Tournament in July/August 2004, but were unfortunate to raise enough money for the team to go on tour, despite desperate endeavours to do so. The proceeds that were raised were thus used for this tournament. The objective of the tournament was to give the team some other exposure and the opportunity to bond.

Twenty seven Under-13 players, departed for Mmabatho on Friday 11th June 2004. As soon as the party arrived, they had to go straight to the Mmabatho stadium where they played a select Under-15 side from Mafikeng. A 3-3 score drew the match. The players were very excited to play at such a magnificent stadium.

The team then reported back to the hotel to book in. A pleasant Friday evening was enjoyed by all players, parents, managers and coach's.

An early start on Saturday morning, 12 June 2004 brought the team into playing a tournament consisting of ten teams, originating from Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Mafikeng. Moroka Swallow Youth Development, entered two teams, namely 'Moroka - A' and 'Swallows - B' sides. All in all nine  games were played by both teams. Some excellent soccer was experienced.

Balfour Park won the tournament, taking home the gold, with Moroka - A, finishing in the silver, one point behind the winners, after having won eight games and losing one Swallows - B, finished a creditable third, and brought home bronze medals.

Sandile Ngidi of Moroka Swallows was awarded with two additional trophies for 'Top Goal Scorer' and 'Player of the Tournament'.

The weekend had a beautiful atmosphere and the organisers of the tournament can be commended for all their hard work and commitment. We believe that development teams need more exposure in such tournaments, unfortunately the costs for creating this platform is always the deciding factor.
