Junior Birds Gearing Up For Metropolitan Cup 22/02/05
The Moroka Swallows under-19 side is hard at work preparing for next month's Metropolitan Cup in Cape Town.

Last season was the first time the Birds competed in this prestigious junior competition, where they put up a credible performance to make it to the quarterfinals, before going down by a single goal to Ajax Cape Town.

This year they are hoping to go even further, as they have an exciting bunch of young players ready to make their mark on the tournament.

The team is coached by former Swallows legends Ace Mnini and Andries Mpondo.

"We are still busy with preparations, but I think that we have a lot of talent here and I expect us to do very well," said Mnini.

Head of youth development, Paul Habib, agreed with Mnini's sentiments.

"Last year was the first time we played in the Metropolitan Cup, and we did pretty well. This time we aim to make it to at least the semi-finals.

"We have some excellent players, who have first team potential. This year we have started preparing much earlier, and we have also had Total come on board to assist inn sponsorship. We are all really looking forward to the challenge."

The tournament runs from 23-28 March and showcase the very best in young talent from all over the country.

Swallows will also be entering their under-15 team into the SuperSport Youth Challenge, which takes place at Balfour Park from 24-28 March.

The team has a number of exciting players who have been promoted from the under-13 ranks and they will be testing their skills against the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, the Ghana Feyernoord side, Arcadia, Wits and the School of Excellence.
