Defending Champs March Into Last 16 26/02/05
Moroka Swallows started their Absa Cup defence on a positive note with a 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town at the Rand Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Dube Birds could have won by a larger margin had they not been wasteful with their chances up front.

Swallows keeper Conrad Hendricks had a quiet afternoon as Ajax rarely visited his area.

In the third minute former Ajax winger Edzai Kasinauyo put the hosts ahead when he tapped in a rebound after Moeneeb Josephs had spilled Gary McNab's header.

Playing as a striker, McNnab did well for the team, but was guilty of several missed chances on the afternoon.

In the 40th minute Cecil Oerson, who was a constant thorn in the Ajax flesh, crossed for Dennis Lota to head home the second goal.

Three minutes later defender Mohammed Ouseb came close to making it three when his header went just wide of goal.

The Birds continued to attack in the second half and in the 52nd minute a Kasinauyo cross was met by Lota, however, the former Chipololo striker shot wide from close range.

Following an Ajax corner in the 65th minute, Swallows caught the visitors on the break and McNab released Kasinauyo, who failed to beat Josephs in a one-on-one situation, much to the dismay of coach Gavin Hunt.

Nathan Paulse almost pulled a goal back for the Urban Warriors in the 66th minute, however his header went wide.

Nine minutes later Mulekalyi Kanku gave the Cape side some hope when he scored from outside the box with a fierce shot after being teed up by Wilfred Mugeyi.

Mugeyi then received his marching orders in the 84th minute after having accumulated two yellow cards.

Swallows wrapped up the game in the 87th minute when Josephs gifted Maimane Phiri a goal after he tried to dribble the ball past his former team-mate, who dispossessed him outside the box.
