Supporters Column by Dan Tsakani Moyane
Since the 1960s I have been a supporter of Swallows. I was born in White City Jabavu, Soweto, in the same street that housed the old Jabavu Stadium where Moroka Swallows Big XV used to play against the likes of Soweto clubs such as Pirates and PUBS, long before Chiefs was born.
Those were the years when German Cutter Kunene used to mesmerize opponents with his grass cutting runs before he made his dangerous crosses into the six yard box and when Mozambique-born Jimmy Benes catlike dives used to frustrate the best strikers as they tried to score against the Birds. I was just a kid at that time and used to love helping the players with their kit as they got ready behind the grandstand for a match. Jabavu Stadium was where the Birds used to soar high in the sky. I have stuck with the Birds through thick and thin, even during the darkest times when they faced relegation. I must confess that sometimes I have been at my wits end and thought I would jump ship. But the love of my childhood team keeps me a loyal supporter.
I think the best decision by the current management was to bring in Gordon Igesund as the coach at the end of 2010 to salvage the situation and keep the Birds in top flight football. Without Swallows, the PSL would be very poor! Even supporters of other PSL teams cannot imagine the PSL without Swallows. I am confident that during this 2011/2012 season, Swallows will finish in the top 8.
Heres to a successful 2012!
