Since this is my first column for the 2013/14 PSL season, let me greet everyone in the Birds Nest and wish all in the Birds family a spectacular season.
We held our pre-season training at Waterstone College in the south of Johannesburg. The facilities there are world class. I believe Mexico stayed there during the 2010 World Cup. The school made us feel welcome the minute we arrived. And I have to express my sincere thanks to the school for their hospitality.
Thus far into the new season, we have already played three matches - two wins against University of Pretoria and Mpumalanga Black Aces, and a draw against Kaiser Chiefs.
I sincerely believe that these results are a reflection of the hard work we did during the preparations. A slightly different approach was taken. We did a lot of weight training, but the focus was on explosive power. It was very tough, under the eyes of our conditioning team: Mike, Sarah and Tobby. But we enjoyed every minute of it.
There are expectaions every season. We are disappointed not to be able to defend our MTN Trophy, so achievement this season is a priority. Everyone is doing their best in their different roles, be it coaching, administration or supporting structure in order to propel the team to dizzy heights.
We lost a couple of players last season, and brought in some fresh blood.
Manqele on loan from Sundowns, Bereng from United FC, Mbekile from Chippa United, Igor from Serbia, Ogle from Golden Arrows, a young striker Darren Lurie and Mokgothu, a local boy who played in Swaziland. This team will go from strength to strength.
I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to lead this team as a captain once more.
I know the road is going to be a long, tough and unpredictable one.
But I promise, every time we fall we will stand up stronger and more determined than before.
Fly Like A Bird!
