Dr Maepa, a former Kaizer Chiefs team doctor, passed away last week after a long illness.
"Dr Phil was more than a friend to me, he was my mentor. I learned a lot from him as he was a knowledgeable doctor," Nematswerani told the official Swallows website.
"In fact, he was already a Chiefs team doctor while I was still studying medicine at university. I actually went to him to seek advice when I was about to accept the Swallows job and he taught me the ins and outs of South African soccer," recalled Nematswerani.
"His death is not a loss only to Chiefs and his family; it is a loss to South African soccer as a whole. Dr Phil has left a big void in the soccer circle and we'll always remember him."
Nematswerani, who recently attended the Beijing Games as part of Team South Africa, concluded: "I would like to send my condolences to the Maepa family and friends, Kaizer Chiefs and everyone who was associated with him. I want to say to all of them that our prayers are with them at this trying time of their lives."
Dr Maepa's funeral will be held at Thokwane village, Driekop, Greater Sekhukhune, Limpopo on Saturday, 30 August 2008.
The service will begin at 7am.
