Swallows Diary - Saturday, July 21

With Moroka Swallows' German tour now over, and the 'Beautiful Birds' expected to land in South Africa this morning, 'Birds' defender Bjorn Gugger gives us his last update of the tour through his very popular Swallows Tour Diary.

Saturday, July 21:

Our wake-up call was at 8am this morning and a half-an-hour later we were all enjoying breakfast. We had some time off in the morning before we left for our game against Hearts. We held our team-talk at 12pm and had lunch at 12.30pm. We were all on the bus by 1.20pm to start our three-hour journey from Sauerland to play against Hearts.

We were able to entertain ourselves on the long drive by watching Borat's latest DVD which gave us a few laughs! At 3.10pm we had a quick five-minute stop and leg stretch. There we had sandwiches and fruit and some of us had to pay about R5 to go to the bathroom. Soon we were on our way again; arriving at the stadium at 4.10pm.

With both teams wearing maroon and white, the match between Swallows and Hearts kicked off. The Scots seemed very hard and were getting struck into tackles, but we didn't seem intimidated by them at all and held our own against them.

With us having more of the possession and better scoring chances, it came as no surprise when we scored late in the first half allowing us to go into half-time with the lead. Yet again the goal was scored by Tsweu Mokoro off a set-piece, a corner this time. The team generally combined well during the second half and were deserved winners at the end of the day.

One of the main objectives for our pre-season camp to Germany was not to concede a goal in the two friendly games that we would play. I think the lads have all worked well together to achieve this first step of many this season.

With the three-hour drive back to the hotel the whole bus was in great spirits, with some of the guys singing. The existing team, new coaching staff and new signings are gelling well and this unbelievable trip to Germany has been extremely important as a building block for the season ahead.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank Volkswagen and everyone that has been involved in making this trip possible, from the whole Swallows team, 'Thank you!'.

All the best
Bjorn Gugger
