Set-Pieces undo Swallows in Defeat to Wits

A brace by defender Kees Kwakman ensured Bidvest Wits continued their winning run as they beat Moroka Swallows 2-0 at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Tuesday night.

The victory takes the Clever Boys to the second spot on the Absa Premiership log standings with 37 points, 10 points behind log leaders Kaizer Chiefs, while Fani Madida’s men remain rooted in 14th place with 19 points.

The hosts dominated proceedings early on as debutant Sipho Moeti unleashed a shot in the 10th minute, however he failed to trouble Moeneeb Josephs.

The Dube Birds enjoyed good passes in the middle of the park, but Gavin Hunt’s men didn’t allow them to penetrate and find their way to the box as they lacked a direct attacking player.

However, in what was seen as a move against the run of play, the Braamfontein side took the lead in the 24th minute when defender Kees Kwakman slotted the ball with his right foot into Greg Etafia’s goal from Sameehg Doutie’s corner.

With one minute left to go to the interval, the hosts missed an opportunity to equalise when Felix Obada took a shot after good interplay between Lefa Tsutsulupa and Lantshene Phalane, but his effort was blocked by Onismor Bhasera.

Chabangu followed with another attempt a few seconds later, but it went straight to Josephs and the Students went to the break leading 1-0.

Five minutes into the second half Wits nearly doubled the lead when Swallows failed to deal with a cross, but Rudi Isaacs conceded a corner.

Following Doutie’s set-piece from the left, a flick-on by Papy Faty in the box gave the oncoming Kwakman a chance to finish with a volley from the far post to give his side a 2-0 cushion.

Madida threw in Siyabonga Nomvethe together with Luyolo Nomandela and their combination gave Buhle Mkhwanazi and Siyabonga Nhlapo problems. Nevertheless, Josephs produced a great save to deny Bhele in the 68th minute.

The Dobsonville side showed enterprise and pushed forward in search of an opener, but defender Larry Cohen’s header went wide off the post from Phalane’s free-kick.

Madida tried to motivate his charges and introduced his substitutions, however it wasn’t meant to be as Wits walked away with the three points, handing Swallows their third loss in succession.
