Young 'Birds' claim third place
Moroka Swallows' Under-19s bounced back from their semi-final disappointment earlier in the day to claim third place in the SuperSport Under-19 Cup at Pimville Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday.
Ajax Cape Town's Under-19s, the eventual tournament winners, had earlier - in this morning's first semi-final - beaten Swallows' Under-19s 4-2 on penalties to progress to the final. The match had to be decided on penalties after the two teams were locked at 2-2 at full-time.
But Swallows then beat Bidvest Wits' Juniors 1-0 in the third/fourth place play-off, with 'Birds' striker Phumelele Bhengu scoring in the 36th minute to give his team the win and a well-deserved third place.
The 'Junior Birds' began the SuperSport U19 Cup with 1-0 wins over Santos and Kaizer Chiefs, before playing to a goal-less draw with BidVest Wits, who they beat in today's play-off match.
Swallows beat Jomo Cosmos 3-1 (0-0 after full-time) on penalities in their fourth group stage fixture, which set up their semi-final clash with Ajax.
