'Lady Birds eager to defend title'
Monday May 15 2006
Michelle Varner, the Manager of the Moroka Swallows Ladies team, believes her charges will successfully defend their SAFA Vodacom League title. The 'Lady Birds' will be pitting their skills against some regional champions from other parts of the country, including the likes of the interestingly named 'Hallelujah Zebra Force' (North West), Detroit (Mpumalanga) and KwaMashu Ladies (KZN) to name a few.
"We're very excited about the tournament as we are the defending champions," said Varner.
"Based on our form this season, we should be able to defend the cup successfully."
The team has been dominating the SAFA Vodacom Women's League for over two seasons now. Their scintillating form saw them win 26 out of 30 matches played, a feat which guaranteed them 78 points - a massive 13 points more than second-placed Bophelong Ladies.
The team scored 123 goals and conceded only 25, the least in the league.
Varner also confirmed that Janine van Wyk was back in the country, having represented the South African Under-20 national team in a match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday.
"Janine returned this morning and is already on her way to the play-offs," said Varner.
"We would have let her have some time to rest if this was any other match, but we definitely cannot do without her this time around."
The star defender was the recent recipient of the 'Lady Birds' Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year Awards for 2005/06.
