Unlucky 'Lady Birds' lose to Spurs

The Moroka Swallows Ladies failed to defend their Vodacom Women's League title after being beaten 1-0 by Cape Town Spurs in the competition's final, played at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday afternoon.

The 'Beautiful Birds' dominated for most of the match but were unfortunate to go down to a single strike from the boots of Spurs' Johanna Solomons in the first half.

The Swallows ladies had done well to reach the final after a gruelling week of matches against some of the best teams in the country.

On Monday the 'Lady Birds' played against Zebra Force from North West trouncing them 5-2. Belinda Nkosi scoring (2), Thokozile Mndaweni (1 pen.) Pam Grabey (1) and Lerato Ruele (1) all got themselves on the score-sheet on the day.

On Wednesday the 'Lady Birds' played Kovsies and managed to romp home to a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a well-taken goal from the boot of star player Belinda Nkosi.

Thursday saw the 'Lady Birds' continue from where they left off the previous day, beating rivals Maindies by a 1-0 score line.

Nkosi was outstanding in attack while Janine Van Wyk has been solid in defence.

Belinda Nkosi has scored 4 goals in this tournament and 25 in the league, a feat which should surely catch the attention of the national selectors.

Augustine Makalakalane the national womens coach was also at the tournament but seemed to spend more time watching the mens play-offs than the women's

The soccer pitch that the ladies had been allocated to play on was rock hard and therefore hardly conducive to playing good football.

Neither was there a technical area for the coaches, nor a chair for the bench.

My experience and that of many other women's teams at the tournament is that once again it has been proven that womens football is a step child of football in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the 'Lady Birds' will be going back to the drawing board to plan for the upcoming 2006/07 season.
