Moroka Swallows (0) 0
Ajax Cape Town (0) 1 (Davids 94’)
Ajax Cape Town stunned Moroka Swallows with a stoppage time goal by Lance Davids to claim a 1-0 Absa Premiership win at the Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Friday evening.
Greg Etafia was virtually a spectator for the majority of the clash, which saw Swallows dominate the proceedings, but he couldn’t do anything about the midfielder’s late strike in the 94th minute.
The Urban Warriors were dealt a blow heading into the encounter as they were without their skipper, Dominic Isaacs, Abbubaker Mobara and Koen van de Laak.
Meanwhile, Swallows were buoyed by their midweek win over Platinum Stars, and they were the first to create an opportunity at goal when Lefa Tsutsulupa controlled the ball on his thigh, but struck it narrowly wide of the far post on 12 minutes.
Siyabonga Nomvethe then tried to open the scoring ten minutes later, but his strike went high and wide of goal, leaving Anssi Jaakkola unfazed inbetween the sticks.
It was, however, a rather uneventful opening half hour to the encounter as Ajax went on to see Toriq Losper nod his header just inches wide of the back post despite being left totally unmarked in the box.
The Dube Birds ended the half with a good spell of possession, and they saw Felix Obada force a great save out of Jaakkola, with the goalkeeper beating away the striker’s effort at the near post with his foot.
Asavela Mbekile started the host’s second half the same way they went into the interval, with an attack at goal. However, his shot went high over the crossbar.
The Urban Warriors then suffered a setback on 55 minutes when Toriq Losper had to be replaced by Cole Alexander due to an injury he sustained in the opening 45 minutes.
Minutes later Granwald Scott turned the ball into the side netting with a cross from Eleazar Rodgers on the byline, as both teams started to step up their attacking play.
Zeca Marques’s men were left appealing for a penalty with 20 minutes remaining after Nazeer Allie and Obada went tumbling inside the box, but nothing was given.
The game was won in the final minutes of stoppage time when Davids, who came off the bench, converted a free-kick from a seemingly impossible distance to see it role under Greg Etafia and into the back of the net.
