A spirited performance carried Moroka Swallows to an emphatic 3-2 victory over archrivals Orlando Pirates at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday night.
Goals by Katlego Mashego, Lefa Tsutsulupa and Lerato Chabangu turned it all around for the Birds, after Pirates had taken the lead through Sifiso Myeni and Andile Jali's first half goals.
Despite many missed chances, there were five goals scored in the original Soweto derby at the Nest.
The opposition set a high pace from the word go and they made it count.
Myeni exploited a gap to collect the ball and calmly slotted the ball past Greg Etafia to take the visitors' 1-0 into the lead.
Jali made it 2-0 from the penalty spot, after Swallows defender Roger da Costa was adjudged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.
However a stroke of genius by Mashego to make it 1-2 gave the Birds a psychological edge going into half-time.
Things only got better in the second half as the Birds midfield rotated positions at will, confusing the opponents.
The Birds fans gasped for air when, with the ‘keeper well beaten, Chabangu’s strike rebounded of the post; but thankfully captain Tsutsulupa was in a perfect position to head into the empty goal make it 2-2.
With the momentum squarely with the hosts, there was no letting go as the feeling was there, that something awesome was about to happen.
Mashego and Chabangu swapped roles, as the latter stood over the ball to deliver a tempting free-kick into the box - which was flicked into goal by the latter and sent the crowd into raptures.
