SuperSport Knock Birds Out of Cup

Moroka Swallows: (0) 0
SuperSport United: (0) 1 (Phala 68’)

Thuso Phala sent SuperSport United through to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup after they claimed a 1-0 victory over Moroka Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto on Wednesday evening.

The victory means the Mtsantsantsa become one of the final teams to progress through to the final eight of the competition, as Swallows suffer another disappointment to their struggling campaign.

A rare start was handed to Sage Stephens in goal for Moroka Swallows, while Cavin Johnson opted to hand Jabu Mahlangu his debut after he made his return to the club after seven years.

The 34-year-old midfielder nearly created a goal from the starting whistle when he delicately floated a ball at the far post. Dino Ndlovu connected to it with ease but failed to test Stephens, heading it wide of goal.

Giorgi Nergadze created Swallows’ first effort at goal in the 18th minute when he drilled in a low free-kick which saw Ronwen Williams smother the Georgian’s effort.
Moments later Williams showed some strong hands when he did well to hold onto Siyabonga Nomvethe’s powerful drive after a cut-in from the left flank before unleashing his shot.

Zeca Marques’s side started to take control of the game and by the half hour mark they were working in plenty of dangerous set-pieces and crosses, with Lefa Tsutsulupa trying one from range.

A great chance fell to the travelling side six minutes later when Thuso Phala gathered the ball on the edge of the box and turned on it. The winger struck a powerful drive down the middle, but his effort was denied by his own teammate, Lebogang Manyama, as it smacked him in the back.

Edward Manqele was found guilty of wasting a goalscoring opportunity at the restart when he fired Tsutsulupa’s cross over the face of goal.

The deadlock was broken by SuperSport in the 68th minute when Thabo Moloi supplied a great cross towards the box. Phala connected with precision and fired in a fierce strike into the top corner to make it 1-0.

Zeka Marques then brought on Dikgang Mabalane and Felix Obada in hope of finding a late equaliser, while Phala missed the chance to wrap up the win with Stephens making a save off his line.
