Birds lose Soweto Derby

Moroka Swallows fell to a 1-3 loss in the Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium on Saturday night.

The match had all the ingredients of a real Soweto rivalry, which added to the rich texture of the vibe that was present at the Volkswagen Dobsonville Stadium on the night.

As has been the trend this quarter, the Birds scored first through Giorgi Nergadze; Chiefs however took full advantage of their momentum and pulled away thanks to Bernard Parker - who scored two goals - and George Lebese.

Swallows were unlucky not to take the lead by the fifth minute, when striker Siyabonga Nomvethe cut in from the left and unleashed only to see his shot rock the crossbar with the 'keeper well-beaten.

Chiefs made their own attempts in an effort to take the lead, but they found Greg Etafia standing sturdy between the posts.

The Birds found the goal in the 20th minute, when Nergadze headed home on the far post from Lerato Chabangu's corner.

A moment of controversy followed four minutes later, when the Birds won a penalty after Chiefs' goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune was adjudged to have brought down Chabangu in the box.

Swallows' leading goalscorer Katlego Mashego stepped up and converted what he thought was his 11th goal in the league, but the referee blew his whistle and ordered a retake. Mashego scored the first retake but that goal too didn't count and he had to take it again, and his shot was saved on the third attempt.

Momentum then shifted as the Birds felt hard done by the man in the middle, and Chiefs found the equaliser in 31st minute through Parker, when he beat Etafia with a low shot.

The score remained 1-1 when the referee blew for the half-time break, with an exciting 45 minutes still anticipated.

Swallows got off the blocks first in the second half, when Nomvethe faced Khune again but he couldn't find a way past, while Lefa Tsutsulupa's follow-up effort was deflected wide.

That was the wake-up call the visitors needed, as they kept the Birds on the back foot thereafter.

They were rewarded in the 54th minute, when Siyabonga Nkosi cut the ball back for Parker who blasted past Etafia.

The visitors went 3-1 up in the 72nd minute, when Lebese beat the offside trap to fired past the advancing Etafia.

There was little else the Birds to do to come back into the match, as time was not on their side and they had to accept the result at the end.
