Rodgers to the double

A brace of goals from striker Eleazar Rodgers, either side of a fine header from Marawaan Bantam, handed Santos a 2-1 win over BidVest Wits in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday.

The three points sees the 'People's Team' move above Moroka Swallows into seventh place on 31 points, just two adrift of fourth-placed 'Clever Boys', whose hopes of challenging for the title are slowly fading away.

Santos took an early lead when Rodgers pounced on Steven French's pass and shot home from the centre of the penalty area in the 15th minute.

The lanky striker threatened to double the 'People's Team's lead midway throught the first half, but Moeneeb Josephs made a good save from his right-footed drive.

Wits were fortunate not to go two goals down when Tawonga Chimodzi hit the crossbar with a 30-yard drive on the half-hour mark.

The Clever Boys created a couple of good chances toward the end of the first half, with Ashraf Hendricks heading wide on 35 minutes before Noah Chivuta forced Wayne Roberts to tip his shot over the crossbar, but the score remained 1-0 in favour of Santos at the break.

Erwin Isaacs hit a shot over the crossbar 10 minutes into the second half as Santos continued their dominace of the game, but it was the visitors who scored next.

Former Santos midfielder Marawaan Bantam got on the end of Bruin Senokoane's cross and headed the equaliser in the 65th minute.

Ricardo Skippers threatened to put the hosts back in the lead in the 77th minute when he latched onto Isaacs' cross, but his header flashed wide of goal.

However, the midfielder provided the cross for Rodgers to score his second of the night with 84 minutes played.

Dale Studzinski tried to bring Wits level in injury-time, but he saw his header saved by Roberts, while Wayne Arendse almost made it 3-1 moments later with a 20-yard drive that was tipped around the post by Josephs.
