AmaZulu to host Stars

Fresh from putting a dent in SuperSport United's Absa Premiership title hopes, AmaZulu will look to continue their push for a top eight place when they welcome Platinum Stars to the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday afternoon (kickoff 3pm).

'Usuthu' were worthy victors over league leaders 'Matsatsantsa', with Siyabonga Mkhwanazi and Jan Sillo netting the goals that handed Clive Barker's men their eighth league win of the season.

The popular KwaZulu-Natal team are now placed 10th on 30 points and within reach of the top eight. Should they achieve that goal then it would be a remarkable turnaround from just a year ago when the club was steeling itself for the relegation/promotion playoffs.

Barker's team have also progressed to the quarterfinals of the cup competition and will be confident of beating Black Leopards to claim a place in the final four.

However, before they entertain such thoughts they must attempt to defeat Platinum Stars, who, like AmaZulu, are in search of a place in the top eight. The 'Tycoons' are level on points with 'Usuthu' and while they may have an inferior goal difference, they do have a game in hand.

Miguel Gamondi's team are also campaigning on two fronts, as they have progressed to the third round of the CAF Champions League where they will face the daunting prospect of taking on continental giants Al Ahly of Egypt.

Few would give the 'Tycoons' much hope of upsetting the North Africans but a victory over AmaZulu this weekend would be a perfect morale boost ahead of their home leg against Ahly on the weekend of April 25-27.

'Usuthu' have the edge in head to head stats: they have won three matches to Stars' two in their five league matches since 2003/04, and claimed a 1-0 win earlier in the 2007/08 season, although the North West team have outscored them five goals to four.
