Five 'Downs stars to miss 'Usuthu' clash

Defending Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns will be without five of their key players when they take on AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium on Monday (kick-off 7.30pm).

Midfielder-cum-striker Manqoba 'Shakes' Ngwenya is injured, while Mbulelo Mabizela, Benson Mhlongo, Brent Carelse and Luvhengo Mungomeni are all serving suspensions.

But Sundowns coach Gordon Igesund remains confident that the 'Brazilians' will come out tops against 'Usuthu', despite these setbacks.

"We want to retain our championship," Igesund told the official Sundowns website.

He added: "Sure we have an uphill battle ahead of us, but we are confident that we can turn this whole thing around. By winning five to six of our first games we can put pressure on other teams.

"The many breaks that we have had have done us the world of good. The guys are looking very sharp from our pre-season. They have all come through it nicely and everybody is fired-up.

"The spirit in the camp is excellent and the players are eager and the national team players all came back healthy with no injuries, but of course Benson will miss the game through suspension. Overall, I am very happy with what we have done in the last five weeks and we are looking forward to our game against AmaZulu."

Sundowns signed five players during the January transfer window and Igesund believes these signings will add value to the already star-studded Chloorkop side.

"Of course with the new signings that I have brought in, everybody is fighting for their place in the starting line-up. This is an excellent situation to be in," concluded the 'Downs boss.
