Santos continues to revive fortunes

A second half goal by Erwin Isaacs earned Engen Santos a much-needed win with a 1-0 scoreline over SuperSport United in an Absa Premiership clash at the Super Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The opening minutes of the game saw the two side's trading chances with Shane Poggenpoel's shot for SuperSport being blocked, while Santos' Romano Scott saw his effort go wide.

SuperSport's Daine Klate caused numerous problems for the 'Peoples' Team' with his enterprising play on the left wing and had three shots on goal within the first 20 minutes. Meanwhile at the other end of the field, former SuperSport players Thando Mngomeni and Koena Mathopa were unable to find the target for Santos.

As the half wore on, it was 'Matsatsantsa' who dominated play, creating several chances on goal, but the likes of Sibusiso Mahlangu, Poggenpoel and Katlego Mphela all failed to beat Santos 'keeper Lee Langeveldt and the sides went into the break tied at 0-0.

Santos had the first real chance of the second half, but Erwin Isaacs was guilty of a close-range miss in the 52nd minute.

Isaacs was however able to make amends just three minutes later when he secured the valuable three points for the struggling Cape Town side, beating SuperSport's goalkeeper Denis Onyango with a header - having been supplied with a cross by Eleazar Rodgers.

The home side fought back strongly and were on top for most of the remainder of the game, but could just not penetrate a stubborn Santos defence, who held on to ensure that their team made it seven out of possible nine points in their last three games.

The teams:

SuperSport United: Onyango, Gaxa, Katza, Khumalo, Mahoa (Tsabedze 77), Klate, Pelembe, Poggenpoel, Mahlangu (Masina 60), Mphela, Tefera (Mashego 55).

Engen Santos: Langevelt, Arendse, Makonese, Bianchi, October, Kanono (Chimodzi 64), Gabonamong, Mngomeni, Scott, Isaacs, Mathopa.
