Maritzburg and Santos draw
Maritzburg United and Santos played to a 0-0 draw in a Castle Premiership match at Harry Gwala Stadium on Friday evening.
Both teams created a number of goal-scoring opportunities, but neither team could find that elusive winning goal.
Santos started the match the better side and should have taken the lead in the 10th minute when in-form striker Koena Mathopa took a powerful shot towards goals, but his shot was saved by Maritzburg 'keeper Aime Kitenge.
Kitenge pulled off another brilliant saved two minutes later to deny Thando Mngomeni, who was making his debut for 'The People's Team'.
Maritzburg's best chance of the half fell to star striker Sandile Ndlovu in the 28th minute when he unleashed a powerful shot that Santos 'keeper Wayne Roberts failed to handle. Collen Zimba then tried to capitalise on the rebound, but his shot went over the bar.
The self same Zimba almost redeemed himself in the 35th minute when he went past several Santos defenders before taking a shot that hit the side netting - leaving the score at 0-0 at half-time.
The home side came back strong in the second half as it try to score the winning goal, but as it was the case in the first half, their strikers let them down again.
First it was Ndlovu who wasted a glorious chance for 'The Team of Choice' in the 62nd minute when he try to dribble many Santos defenders inside the Santos penalty area and he ended up losing the ball.
Then it was Zimba who shot over the bar when he received a brilliant cross from Graham King on the stroke of full time.
The draw, however, was enough to temporarily take Maritzburg out of the relegation zone, as they moved up to 13th position on the Castle Premiership standings.
