Ajax overpower Wits
A first-half goal by Brent Carelse was enough to earn Ajax Cape Town a well-deserved 1-0 Castle Premiership win over BidVest Wits at Athlone Stadium on Saturday night.
Ajax dominated the ball possession in the first half and it was no surprise when they went into the half-time break leading 1-0.
The 'Urban Warriors' should have taken the lead as early as the 11th minute, but Terror Fanteni's powerful shot hit the cross-bar with Wits - and former Ajax CT - 'keeper Moeneeb Josephs well beaten.
The self-same Fanteni then went on a brilliant solo run that almost resulted into a goal, but Josephs reacted quickly and snatched the ball off Fanteni's feet.
Ajax did not to wait long though for a goal as captain Brent Carelse scored for the 'Urban Warriors' a minute later.
A goal-mouth scramble in the Ajax goals almost resulted into a Wits equaliser, but the ball was eventually cleared off the line - leaving the score 1-0 in favour of Ajax at half-time.
The 'Students' started the second half the better side and should have grabbed an equaliser in the 67th minute when Noah Chivuta's cross found Marco de Jesus unmarked inside the Ajax penalty box - only for the striker to miss the target with his header.
Fanteni almost doubled the Ajax lead in the 80th minute when he connected with Brett Evans' free-kick, but his header was saved by Josephs.
Wits' Phil Evans sent in a good cross six minutes later, but substitute Kenwyn Manuels headed the ball wide and with that went Wits' chance of stealing a point from Ajax.
The win took Ajax to fourth position on the Castle Premiership standings, while Wits moved down to fifth position.
