SA prepare for Women's U20 World Cup
Basetsana's preparations are in full swing ahead of their World Cup qualifying match against Mozambique on Sunday, January 13 at Pretoria's Caledonian Stadium.
The Under-20 Women's World Cup will be held in Chile in November 2008, but South Africa will start their qualifying campaign against Mozambique, who have always proved a handful in the past.
Basetsana are bolstered by the inclusion of a number of players who presently feature in Banyana Banyana; namely Basetsana captain Gloria Thato, Memory Makhanya, Kylie-Ann Louw, Lusinda Bowers and Mamello Makhabane.
The bulk of the players have been groomed for two years or more at the SAFA/LOTTO Girls High Performance Centre in Pretoria.
"It is now time for the High Perfomance players to prove their worth," said Anna Monate, the head coach of the U20 squad and head coach of the High Perfomance Centre.
Fran Hilton-Smith, the Head of Women's Football, added: "The team is very well prepared and we are confident of qualification for the World Cup if everything goes according to plan.
"Problems like overage players and poor refereeing have always cost us in the past and we certainly hope this does not occur this time around."
All the big guns, like Nigeria, Ghana, Dr Congo, and Congo, have again entered the competition and securing one of the two places up for grabs will be difficult.
The gates in Pretoria will open at 12 noon on Sunday and kick-off is at 3pm.
