Arrows and Stars share the spoils
Wednesday April 26 2006
Free State Stars moved into 15th position in the Castle Premiership standings after their 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
The home team dominated the match and should have won the game by an avalanche of goals, but were let down by their strikers' woeful finishing.
Arrows' first opportunity of the match came as early as the second minute when Alton Meiring received a through ball from Papi Zothwane. The striker was, however, beaten to the ball by Stars' goalkeeper Simla Mashinini.
Mabhuti Khanyeza found himself unmarked in the Stars box in the 13th minute, but he shot narrowly wide of goals, with the visitors almost taking the lead in the 24th minute when Matome Madimabe took a powerful shot at goals - only for Arrows 'keeper Davies Phiri to save his shot.
The self-same Phiri pulled off yet another brilliant save six minutes later to deny Simphiwe Tshabalala and Zothwane could only look on in dismay in the 44th minute when his shot hit the cross-bar - leaving the score at 0-0 at half-time.
Arrows looked the better side in the second half and should have taken lead in the 63rd minute when Meiring intercepted a back pass, but he once again failed to get pass Mashinini.
Alois Ngwerume eventually put Stars in the lead in the 87th minute, but Billy Mwanza equalised in the referee's optional time to make sure that the two teams shared the spoils.
